Air is no longer a transparent, formless and natural element of the biosphere, but rather the result of a series of oppressive and extractive conditions brought about by human action. Lack of brings together a series of sculptures and a sound piece that explore different ways in which bodies relate to the atmospheric environment.
Drawing on the ideas of Emanuele Coccia and Luce Irigaray, the exhibition centres on air as an immense, fluid body that enables constant exchange between the atmosphere and the community that inhabits it. From this perspective, the works create a setting where air flows, is absent, subjugates and sustains; revealing how the absence of something highlights the interdependence of that very thing.
The sound piece Lack of – Ambient soundtrack (2024) – which you can listen to whilst browsing this page by turning on your computer’s sound – serves as the exhibition’s soundtrack, filling the gallery via four parallel channels. Through various respiratory and vocal sounds associated with breathlessness – such as exhalation, sighing, anoxia or suffocation – this piece delves into the multiple physical, abstract and auditory layers of breathing, emphasising its universal nature as a primary act of existence.

Reflective fabric, ropes, carabiners, ratchets and stainless steel structure

Lack of – Padded
Reflective fabric, plastic fabric, foam, soft rubber, ropes, carabiner, acrylic, steel strip and chrome-plated brass tube
130 cm x 150 cm x 47 cm aprox.

Lack of – Padded is part of a series of works that explores the uses and disuses of various protective and survival devices in an aerial context. Drawing on the forms and functions of parachutes, restraint systems, passive safety devices, high-altitude flight suits and padded elements, this work presents itself as an object that straddles the line between the utilitarian and the high-tech, whilst at the same time offering us a certain sense of estrangement regarding its way of being in the world.

Steel curved sheets, stainless steel tube, iron tube and stainless steel threaded rod
100 cm x 46 cm x 46 cm
2024
The Flujo Abrazo series, presented in Lack of, features various tubular compositions that draw their inspiration from the pipes, chimneys and tanks found in ventilation systems, boilers and industrial production facilities. Working with sculptural gestures that open and close, embracing or enfolding, these elements are conceived as conduits, conveyors or even collectors of the air that surrounds us.

Steel curved sheets, stainless steel tube, iron tube and stainless steel threaded rod
105 cm x 36,5 cm x 39 cm

Untitled
Bent iron tubes, threaded stainless steel rods, rust, methacrylate, carabiners and key ring accessories
98 cm x 33 cm x 6 cm
2024
Much like the Flujo Abrazo sculptures, this work makes use of tubular metal elements that bear a certain resemblance to the shapes represented by the pipes in ventilation systems. These are hollow tubes and pipes that, in some way, contain and even carry air.
In this particular piece, the tubular structures are accompanied by what I call ‘cloud chains’ – a series of forms that are linked together as if they were key rings and which correspond to a set of symbols currently used in weather and aviation reports to indicate the height, density and shape of clouds. In this way, the sculpture is composed of different representations of air, vapour and various states of condensation of matter – often through their very absence.
