Massive office buildings and co-working spaces are the insignia of gentrification. Its unstoppable construction force the neighbors of those areas to constantly coexist with low frequency and repetitive sounds resulting from the modification of the urban territory. Slowly, by spending time with those piercing noises and vibrating windows, I started to find musical patterns in them, very close to the rhythms of techno and industrial music. This project arises, then, as the consequence of a desperate action to survive the urban landscape.
Technoconstructivismo [Technoconstructivism] is a sound installation that meditates on the concept of gentrification and its consequent modification of the territory, using the repetitive and mechanical sounds and vibrations emitted by construction machinery to compose a 3 channel sound composition that transforms the noises in 2 techno sessions and 1 low- frequency sound piece that can only be listened through a modified speaker.
The sound pieces are inserted in a modular drywall structure, epitome of the high- density construction, which, at the same time, hosts an energy drink fountain – a fluid in constant movement that symbolizes the eternal circuit of the hyper-production – and 60 m. of serpentine wires that cover the composition in a never-ending material continuum.
This project has been possible thanks to the prize Premis Barcelona 2020 (Barcelona City Hall) and the open call Art Jove 2021 (Generalitat de Catalunya, Spain).
